Orders galore

I have been swamped with custom orders since opening my Etsy shop! I am loving it. So here is a few pics of what I have knit by request:

A shark hat for a little girls birthday!!
The kid in the picture is Vicious, not the recipient lol.

Baby sandals!! How stinking cute are these? Love them!! This is just one of several orders I have gotten.

I also have made a watermelon hat that I have away as a Instagram giveaway. Don’t have pictures yet but plan to snap a few before I mail it off.

Lastly a little happy moment for me. A dear friend had noticed I had been a little down in the dumps due all my health issues. Well she ordered me a present and it arrived yesterday. I was over the moon excited!!

I did it

For some time now I have had customers, especially repeat customers, ask when I was going to open an Etsy shop. I was reluctant to do so since it seemed like a lot of hassle and I already have a steady stream of custom orders just from word of mouth. Well last night I took the plunge and started a shop! Right now it’s just a few items but I plan to add more in the coming weeks.
Check out my shop and favorite it so you can see the updates and added items!

Also I have an Instagram page you should follow! I will have coupon codes and giveaways in the upcoming weeks that I will be posting there.

Hope everyone will check it out. Happy knitting.

New techniques

This has been a slow week. I haven’t accomplished much. I worked some on my baby sophisticate but it still is not finished. I need to get on it since it’s a birthday gift and I have to give it to the birthday boy on Saturday! Yikes!!!

The main reason I haven’t finished is because I have been sick. I caught a stomach bug from my kids(thanks girls) and that had me down. That in turn caused my RA to flare so now I am sore. Good times!! It has been very hard to knit with joint pain. So, to combat this I learned a new technique.
I taught my self how to knit Portuguese style. This has been life changing!! It cause zero hand strain, purling is easier than knitting, and I have increased my speed!! All pluses!
I watched this video and went to town. I am using my neck right now to keep tension but I plan to get a knitting pin soon.

If you will remember from the last post, I am doing a photo a day challenge with Geeky Girl Knits and Knitters Pride. Well, this week one of my pictures was chosen as a finalist!! Sooo if anyone wants to hop over to Ravelry and vote for Pic A, well I would not be mad at you 😃

That’s it’s! Hopefully I will have some FOs for the next post.
Happy knitting

Just call me Tortoise

Hello Knitters and readers of knitting blogs 🙂 Hope you all are well.

If you recall I have been looking for my knitting mojo, the gusto for FOs and the lulling click of needles. Well, it’s gone. I think it’s probably under my bed but who knows 😉
I have decided it’s time to take a step back and let this lapse in knitting run it’s course. I have still been knitting but at a much slower pace and I have decided that I am ok with that. My orders are still getting filled so I say that’s as good as I can do right now.

I completed a few things in this past week. All of which were a first! I love when I get requests for things I haven’t made before. I love the challenge of finding the perfect yarn, needles, getting the size right, coming up with a pattern, etc. That is the kind of thing that gets me knitting. I need more of that in my life.

First up was a baby infinity scarf. I may have mentioned this in my last post, can’t remember. Either way I have completed and blocked it. It is adorable!! I may make one for Thing 2 just in a bigger size.

I knit this in Monte Donegal yarn. Color Violet.
I love this yarn. This is the second item I have knit with it and I can guarantee it won’t be the last.
For this I used a size 6 16″ circular and co 102. I did a 2 row border in a 1×1 rib, knit even for 4.5″ then another 2 row 1×1 rib border and cast off using Jenys stretchy bind off. Voila, baby infinity scarf!! Can’t wait to see it on the recipient.

I started another project for a birthday gift. A friends son is turning 1 and I am making him a Baby sophisticate. I love these little jackets and once she saw the one I made before, she requested one. I LOVE making stuff for people who actually appreciate it! He is till wearing the hats I made him when he has born, granted they were knit bigger. I will most likely make a hat to go along with this sweater.

I am making this with Berocco Vintage. Another of my favorite yarns. I would say that about 40% of my stash is this yarn. I highly recommend it.
I plan to do the border, button bands and sleeve cuffs in this contrasting yarn.

I can’t wait to see this finished!!

That’s all I have for you all as far knitting stuff goes. I will leave you all with awesome pictures of my babies. Proud mama…Vicious is the brunette, Thing 2 is the blonde.

Where’s my mojo?

I have lost my knitting Mojo. It is gone. I am knitting at a snails pace these days. Actually I think the pace at which I knit lately is insulting to snails. This is especially bad since I have orders I have to fill! BLAH!!

I have finished a couple things though. Four to be exact. They each took all of 15 minutes to complete. See, sad. If it takes more than a few minutes I am just not getting it done!! Oh me and my instant gratification needs. Hopefully I can start cranking out some FOs soon.

I was clicking along pretty nicely in a hat but realized the color was off and had to have to have the right yarn ordered. So I am currently waiting on my LYS to let me know when that is in. Maybe that will knock my rear in gear. Hmm…

Here are a few pics of my measly 4 items I have finished this week.

This was my first attempt at knitting with beads. Not to bad. It did take some trial and error to get the letters to face the correct way.

It’s an owl incase you can’t tell 🙂

That’s it!
One last thing before go. I was sitting in my den last night, when Vicious comes in and hands me a sticker and says “Mom, I found this sticker in a book. It made me think of you.”

Until next time. Happy knitting.

Let’s talk about socks

For those that are new around here, I joined a Year long KAL hosted by KnittingSarah, to knit socks. The concept is simple, knit either a row, an entire sock or anything in between everyday for a year. I am a row or two kind of girl and haven’t complete many socks.
Well, a few weeks ago I decided to actually complete another pair of socks! I grabbed my needles and yarn and set off to make socks. I made A sock. Yep, one sock. Then decided I hated it and didn’t make the match.

The problem was the fit. And the holes!! Oh, the holes!!! First off I have huge feet. I wear a size 9 and they are wide. Cute, huh? 🙂
Second up, I tried toe-up socks for the first time and the wedge toe increases made holes all along the toe. For these reasons I couldn’t live with this sock. So, I set off with larger size needles (I went from a size2 to a size 4) and a thin worsted weight yarn and started making socks I liked.
What I learned during this process is that toe-up socks work best(for me) using the magic loop method. This really did make a world of difference.
Those that are scared of magic loop, don’t be!! It is actually very simple and so much quicker than DPNs.

My first problem was the toe. It was very narrow the way the pattern I was using had it. I used Judy’s Magic cast on and it said to CO 10(5 per needle). This made a very pointy toe. So I changed it. I cast on 16(8 per needle) and began to work the wedge.
Now the original pattern had me doing the wedge increases by KFB on the first and last stitch on each needle. This made holes. I hate holes. No matter how tight or loose I tried to knit, it still had holes. After some trial and error I figured out a good increase that eliminated that problem. Instead of KFB, I increased by K1,m1, knit to 1 before the end,m1,k1(repeat for second needle) then knit a row even in between until I had 40 sts(20 per needle).
This really made a nice toe.

20140318-090822.jpg
From there it was pretty basic. I knit even until I got to the heel.
Another plus of magic loop, so easy to try on socks while you knit them!
Once I got to the heel I did the sweet tomato heel. I have to say, this is my favorite heel! I don’t care for typical short rows, again due to holes. This eliminates holes and makes a nice round heel. I highly recommend this technique for a toe-up sock.

Now, the problem I am having is finding a bind-off I like. I tried a regular bind-off and it’s very tight. I then attempted the interlocking bind off and while it’s very stretchy, it doesn’t look very neat. I guess a bit more practice may change that. Hmm…

What bind-off do you like for toe-up socks?

20140318-091532.jpg

20140318-091547.jpg

You may be asking yourself “What is up with that yarn?” Well, I have no idea lol. It was variegated in places, striped in others and had no real rhyme or reason to it. It was good practice yarn though haha.

Oh, the things you learn

Today was a day of discovery. Useless discovery, but discovery none the less.
I went to my LYS today to pick up some needles and chat with the ladies working there. While I was paying they got a phone call from someone saying she had an Afghan that needed fixing and if there was a CERTIFIED MASTER KNITTER available to help!! Now, I know what you’re thinking. You are thinking “Wait, what? Is that really a thing?” Well, yes it apparently is! I also thought and asked that question while they were relaying this story.
Apparently you can join The Knitters Guild Association(also a real thing, I had no idea) and then take a test to become a Certified Master Knitter!!
OMG, wow!!
What can you do once you get certified, you may be wondering. Well friends, I will tell you….
NOTHING
Nothing at all!! You pay a truck load of money, knit a bunch of swatches they tell you, get them judged and critiqued, and if you pass you get a pin and a certificate and can write “Master knitter” on a business card. It is basically a useless title that says “I knit good”.
There are only about 300 CMK in the world. You know why? 1)the test is crazy hard and 2) Who wants to take a test(takes like a year to finish all the parts) so they can say they knit well?

So, sorry followers, I will never be able to put “Master Knitter” on my business cards. *sigh* Don’t these people know that instead of paying hundreds of dollars for useless titles they could use that money to buy yarn!!

Am I the only person that was unaware of this?

What I’ve been up to

I finally finished the Baby and Child sophisticate!!! It turned out so cute!!

20140303-081636.jpg

20140303-081701.jpg
Seriously, how stinking cute are those buttons!! I knit this in the 12month size and it was a super quick knit once I actually sat down and worked on it. I plan to make several more of these for my kiddos and for some friends.

Next on my knit to-do list was learn to knit a toe-up sock. I went onto Ravelry and found a pattern and set to work. I used the Basic toe up sock pattern. This pattern was very easy to follow and the socks turned out great. I used Universal yarns Bamboo pop in color Pastel swirl. I LOVE this yarn!!!
I did have trouble figuring out the cast on but I watched this video and got the hang of it rather quickly. I think toe up is my new fave way to knit socks.
My next new technique was the sweet tomato heel. It is a type Of short row heel that doesn’t have wraps. Wait..short rows without wraps you say? YES!! Short rows without wraps!! I loved this heel. No snags or holes from picking up those dang wraps. Just a nice smooth, well fit heel. I used this video to figure out the heel and can’t wait to knit another pair of these socks.

20140303-082855.jpg

I started my next PIF project this weekend also. Yes, I know I have all year but I just HAVE to get them done. It is really bothering me lol. I decided for the next one I would make a highway hat! I saw a picture of one and knew I had to make it. So, since I was too lazy to find a pattern and it looked fairly easy, I grabbed a bunch of yarn in colors I thought would work and did this…

20140303-083233.jpg
I order car buttons to sew onto the “road” to add detail. Can’t wait for those to arrive and ship off PIF #2.

Last but not least, I started and restarted a slouchy hat for an order. I have no idea what was wrong with this hat but it did not want to be told what to do. I kept finding holes or the yarn wouldn’t tighten properly or the tension would go all wonky in spots for no reason. It was really irritating! By the 5th time ripping it out and starting over, I decided to double strand it and that seems to be doing the trick. I do not want to rip this hat again. It’s already one step away from going into a time out.

That’s about it for now. Hope everyone has a happy Monday.

WIPs and weirdness

I think I have commitment issues. I just cannot seem to knit only one project at a time. Right now I have 4 projects in various stages of completion.
I am *trying* to work on the WIP that is for an order, seeing as how it has already been paid for and that is the responsible thing to do.
Let’s take a look at what’s on the needles right now, shall we…

First up is a wool diaper cover. I am knitting it in pink and purple, using Universal Yarn 100%wool. I really enjoy knitting these since they are basically just hats with butt flaps. They work up quick and no pattern is needed!!

20140209-151549.jpg

Next up is a Baby Sophisticate. I have seen so many people knit these and wanted to give it a try. I am using Berrocco Vintage in color Aguae. It’s a washable wool and so soft. Perfect for a tiny human. Only problem I have is I don’t have a tiny human in mind for the FO. Oh, well. Friends are always popping out spawn so I doubt I will have to wait long to find a recipient.

20140209-151945.jpg
I also purchased my FIRST pair of knitters pride cubix needles just for this project. I LOVE them!! I already live knitter pride needles but these are a whole new level of super awesomeness. First they are square so they are much easier to grip and second they don’t hurt my hands!! I have RA and certain needles are just not good for my hands, these are not one of those needles. I may be switching to these.

The last two WIPs consist of a 10 stitch blanket and an entrelac scarf. No photos right now but I hope to take some soon.

I will leave you all with a touch of weirdness.
We are redoing our kids bathroom and while looking for towel hooks on Amazon, I came across these gems. Who wouldn’t want this?

Happy Knitting 🙂

What day is it?

My days seem to be running into one another. This month has been a huge cluster f$$k of craptasticness.

First off Vicious got glasses, which are adorable on her. The only issue was for the first week she wore them she got horrible migraines and couldn’t do anything, including go to school! So she missed several day due to headaches. No biggie.

20140131-133918.jpg
Adorable right!?!
Anyhoo, her eyes adjust to the glasses and she is ready to go back to school then BAM!! We all get the flu!!!
Let me tell you, the flu is horrible!! Don’t get it!!!
Again out of school. This time for both vicious and Thing 2.

After I get everyone well again it decides to freaking snow!!! I live in the south and all the stereotypes about them shutting down everything for bad weather is true!! No school again. Heck we had a delay today jut because it was COLD!!
This is our snow day.

20140131-134409.jpg

So, this was my long winded way of saying not much knitting has happened this month.
I did make some baby leg warmers and a couple hats but that’s about it. I started a scrap yarn 10 stitch blanket today to help get rid of my odds and ends. I will have to link the pattern next time since I am on my phone right now.

Hope everyone else has had better luck at knitting this month and let’s all keep our fingers crossed that the dang groundhog doesn’t see his shadow this weekend 🙂
